Chair Hover Legs Swings

  • Harder
  • Seated, leaning back
  • Stomach & waist
  • Hips
  • Legs

Starts at 20:18 in “Seated Exercises To Rid Tummy Fat For Good!”. The time is from YouTube's automatic chapters, so it may be a few seconds out.

What it is

Lean back a little, lift both legs just off the floor, and swing them gently. A harder core exercise.

How to do it

  1. Sit near the front edge and hold the sides of the chair firmly.
  2. Lean back slightly with a straight back.
  3. Straighten your legs and lift both feet just off the floor.
  4. Swing the legs gently apart and together, or one up and one down. Rest when your form slips.

Key tip: Keep the feet low. Higher legs mean more strain on the lower back.

Who should skip it, and why

  • You have low back pain, a hernia, or had stomach or chest surgery in the last few months. Leaning back with your legs lifted pulls hard on the lower back and the stomach wall.
  • You have had a hip replacement and were given hip precautions (for example, not bending the hip past a right angle or crossing your legs). Lifting the knee high or crossing the body can go past those limits.

Easier and harder versions

Easier
Keep one foot on the floor and swing the other leg only.
Harder
Lean back a little further while keeping your back straight.

How much

In our videos each move runs for about 40 seconds with 20 seconds of rest. Start with less if you need to. Comfortable effort is the goal, not exhaustion.

Stop straight away and get help if you feel:
  • chest pain, pressure or tightness
  • dizziness, light-headedness or faintness
  • breathlessness that doesn't settle when you rest
  • sharp or joint pain, or pain that gets worse as you go
  • numbness, tingling, or a sudden severe headache

This is general exercise information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, or you've had a fall, injury or surgery recently, check with your doctor or physiotherapist first.
