Chair Bicep Curls

  • Gentle
  • Seated
  • Arms

Starts at 0:38 in “Seniors Over 60: Do This Chair Workout Daily & See What Happens”. The time is from YouTube's automatic chapters, so it may be a few seconds out.

What it is

Bend your elbows to bring your hands to your shoulders, then lower. Strength for carrying and lifting.

How to do it

  1. Sit tall with arms by your sides, palms facing forward.
  2. Keep your elbows close to your body.
  3. Bend the elbows to bring your hands up toward your shoulders.
  4. Lower slowly.

Key tip: Squeeze your fists as you lift to make the muscle work harder without weights.

Who should skip it, and why

  • Your elbow is sore when it bends against resistance (for example tennis or golfer's elbow). Curling can irritate the tendon. Do it with no weight and stop if it hurts.

Easier and harder versions

Easier
One arm at a time.
Harder
Hold a water bottle or a can in each hand.

How much

In our videos each move runs for about 40 seconds with 20 seconds of rest. Start with less if you need to. Comfortable effort is the goal, not exhaustion.

Stop straight away and get help if you feel:
  • chest pain, pressure or tightness
  • dizziness, light-headedness or faintness
  • breathlessness that doesn't settle when you rest
  • sharp or joint pain, or pain that gets worse as you go
  • numbness, tingling, or a sudden severe headache

This is general exercise information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, or you've had a fall, injury or surgery recently, check with your doctor or physiotherapist first.
